Beautiful Scenery and Amazing History in West Point, New York

Racheline Maltese
West Point, located in the beautiful Hudson Valley just an hour north of New York City, is a wonderful destination for either a day trip or weekend getaway.

Guided tours of the West Point campus are available, and attractions include the West Point Museum, which houses over two-hundred years of United States military history, the West Point Cemetery which has been in use since the Revolutionary War era (although it was only officially designated a cemetery in 1817) and Constitution Island, located in the Hudson and a key element in defending the area against British warships during the Revolutionary War.

Constitution Island tours, which include elements of historic reenactment, last over two hours and are regularly available on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 1pm and 2pm, but other times can be arranged by appointment. Tours only take place from late June to late September, but they are a highlight of the natural beauty and critical history of the area.

Visitors to West Point shouldn't just limit themselves to the campus itself. West Point is situated near the charming town of Cold Spring which has excellent restaurants, boutiques and antique shops. Cold Spring is easily accessibly via Metro North and the West Point campus is accessible by a shuttle bus from there, making these unique landmarks accessible to New York City residents without cars.

Visitors to West Point visitors over the age of 16 should remember to bring ID to access the campus and always check their website before visiting for policy updates related to special events like football games and school ceremonies.
