Beauty and the Beast: Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG

V12 with Two Turbos, Yikes!

Seth Joyner
If you're looking to buy a Mercedes Coupe and you're in the market for spending about $200,000; then look no further than the ultimate tool of hedonism. The 2010 Mercedes Benz CL65 AMG coupe, the most luxurious Corvette killer on the road; and it even has rear seats to ensure you have your friends laughing along with you when you blast by a Corvette at 150 mph. Unfortunately 150 mph is all you're going to be able to achieve, sadly the CL65 AMG has an electronic fuel cutoff for the U.S. at that speed. To be completely honest, with the amount of power the CL65 AMG produces, who knows what the top speed is...And do you really want to find out. Mercedes Benz had decided a while ago that a 6.0 liter V12 engine wasn't quite enough for the more performance oriented consumers of luxury coupes, so what did they do? They outfitted the 365 cubic inch CL65 AMG V12 engine with two turbochargers! So what do you get from the CL65 AMG V12 with two turbos? How about a jaw dropping 604 horsepower and an earth shattering 738ftlbs of torque. If that's not enough of a slap in the face to most sports car owners, consider this...The CL65 AMG only weighs 4500 pounds.

So, with this kind of power to weight ratio, a manual gear box is kind of out of the question; unless you're looking to be buried in your new CL65 AMG. The CL65 AMG is outfitted with a five speed automatic, indecently one of the strongest transmissions ever built, considering the amount of torque it has to deal with on a daily basis. So, what kind of straight line performance can you expect out of this bull's engine placed in a china cabinet frame? 62 mph can be achieved in 4.4 seconds and 8.9 seconds later you're doing a boiling 124 mph.

On the outside of this robust sport luxury coupe it's plain to see that it's no ordinary two door Mercedes, with acutely shaped AMG front and rear bumpers created for the sole purpose of keeping the brakes cool and the car on the ground. If we forgot to mention the brakes; because stopping is important when you're going this fast. The brakes consist of massive carbon-ceramic rotors and eight piston calipers in the front and six piston in the rear. And yes you did read that correctly. The CL65 AMG rolls on 20 inch AMG wheels wrapped in 245 and 275 rubber. This amazing super car even runs on 91 octane gas, which is good considering that you're only going to get 11 mpg in the city and hopefully 17 mpg on the highway. Thank the car god's for giving the CL65 AMG a 24 gallon fuel tank. So, if you are different than almost everyone else in the world and you can afford this car, I promise you will not be disappointed.
