What is Beautiful?

Beauty Culture opened at Century City's Annenberg Space for Photography. This intriguing display aims to explore general opinions of what is beautiful through photos. Among the photos, a 30 minute documentary containing the featured photographers created by Lauren Greenfield discusses the inside of the beauty industry. Modeling agents Eileen Ford and Bethann Hardison and models Crystal Renn and Carmen del Orefice share their perspective.

The documentary has footage of toddler beauty queens with spray tans and peculiar costumes. Jackie Goldberg, Ms. Senior L.A. 2005, gave an interview while making it obvious she is a fan of the latest cosmetic treatments available to deter aging.

Containing 500 photographs, the show is subdivided into categories. Modeling Industry displays major super models that are famous for their beauty. A wall of photos with only "first names" features many fashion shots from photographers such as Melvin Sokolsky, Tyen, Lillian Bassman, Matthew Rolston, Herb Ritts, and Gilles Bensimon.

The Hollywood Glamour Machine focuses in on classic and ionic beauty. Veronica Lake, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, and Angelina Jolie have photos hanging as part of this category. The Marilyn Syndrome has photos of modern women posing and embracing their inner Marilyn Monroe. Anna Nicole Smith and Linsday Lohan are among the women who have portrayed the late entertainer. A beauty of her own, she will never be truly emulated.

Women such as Jennifer Lopez are displayed in Color of Beauty. This section allows viewers to look into the different shades of skin that are part of the beauty industry.

"The whole point of [the exhibit] from my approach is deconstructing the world we live in and understanding what's behind these pictures in the magazines--understanding what we're seeing," says Greenfield in The LA Times. Lauren Greenfield is well-known for her exploration into the dynamics behind beauty in society. Documentaries and books discussing the hard-to-tackle topics, such as youth dealing with body image and adult women dealing with lifelong anorexia, are Greenfield's specialty.

This event is scheduled to continue through the rest of the year until November.
