I did eventually come across some things that seemed to be effective. To tell the truth, I was a little surprised at what they were. You'll find them listed below along with some brief explanations about why they work.
Don't Shampoo Every Day
If you have frizzy hair shampooing every day is not a good idea. Shampoo strips the hair of necessary oils that help keep it soft, strong, and manageable. I noticed that when I shampoo my hair too often it becomes dry and brittle. Try shampooing every other day instead.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar is wonderful for the hair. When we shampoo, condition, and use hair sprays and gels, we accumulate quite a chemical build up in our hair. This of course can create a lot of problems for those of us with frizz. Try rinsing your hair every week or two with the following Apple Cider Vinegar mixture to eliminate build up.
Mix 1 cup ACV with 4 cups water. Shampoo, condition, and rinse as normal, then rinse one final time with the ACV mixture.
All Natural Hair Care Products
I found that regular shampoo, conditioner, and other hair products are a little too harsh for my hair. Switching to a fragrance free shampoo & conditioner that doesn't use unnecessary chemicals has worked much better. You can find all natural and botanical hair products online, at hair care stores, some department and drug stores, and organic markets such as Whole Foods Market.
Emergency Frizz Relief
In some cases you don't have time to do a lot for frizz and you need a quick fix. Rubbing a little lotion over the hair, especially at the tips is an effective way to keep frizz under control. If you don't have lotion available a little chap stick will do the trick. Just spread a small amount on palms and then smooth over hair.
A Few More Tips
It is best to use a large tooth comb or a pick for frizzy hair. Make sure you aren't combing too forcefully though. Doing so will cause breakage and split ends which will then create uneven strands that stick out and create that frizzy look. You'll also want to avoid combing too often.
Wearing a shower cap at night is also effective; it keeps your hair from rubbing against the pillow case all night and creating friction. We all know that friction is the last thing frizzy hair needs.
When showering try to rinse hair with the coolest water you can handle; hot water will only make frizz worse.
A Final Word
We sometimes think that we have to spend a ton of money on special products to get the results we want. I have found just the opposite to be true. Most of the time the things that work are very simple and inexpensive solutions that involve, either a change in the way I do something, or a little creativity with what I have. My hair has been no exception.
So, although some of these suggestions may seem a little odd, I encourage you to give them a try. You may be surprised at how well they really work.
