Beauty Tricks for Unruly Hair

Sarah Monroy
I have hated my hair since I was a child. It was always too thick, too curly, and too wild for me to deal with. To this day I struggle with it, but I have found a few tricks that work well to tame the beast that is my hair, and will help others with troublesome hair.

Buy a Great Shampoo
While it may seem wasteful to spend excess money on a shampoo, if you are concerned with how your unruly hair looks, it isn't. Good shampoos make all the difference. They prep your hair for easier styling once you are out of the shower and keep your hair from drying out and becoming frizzy, which is one of my biggest challenges. I use Pureology's line for color treated hair. This is the most amazing shampoo and conditioner I have ever used! I can literally feel my hair becoming smoother every time I put the delicious-smelling shampoo and conditioner on my hair. Though they are very pricey, I believe they are worth every cent, as I instantly see a difference whether I use this shampoo and conditioner pair, or another cheaper pair. You may need to shop around before you find a shampoo and conditioner that will compliment your unruly hair, but you should stick with a good one once you find it.

Buy a Good Hair Straightener
Hair can become extremely damaged by poor tools. That is why it is important to research and buy high quality products before using any sort of heating tool on your hair. After much research of my own, I decided to buy a Chi hair straightener 4 years ago. First off, the fact that it has lasted for 4 years has absolutely amazed me! It works nearly as well as the day I bought it, and even though, again, I paid a little more for it, I see a complete difference in my hair than when I use a cheaper Revlon hair straightener that I have for traveling. By buying durable, reliable products, you save your already hard-to-manage hair the misfortune of burning or stretching it.

Buy a Good Multivitamin
It probably gets tiring reading about how adequate nutrition affects everything you do. Well, sorry, but it does! Your hair is a direct result of your nutrition. Shiny, healthy hair comes from having the adequate amount of nutrition. B-vitamins, especially biotin, help hair grow longer and stronger. Though they don't change the curliness or straightness of your hair (that's up to genetics), they can make the hair you do have look more beautiful and healthy.

Don't Fight It
Sometimes, my hair will not behave no matter what I try to do to it. So, these days, instead of trying to destroy my hair to get it to be something it is not, I let it go natural. It can be embarrassing at first - you don't know what other people will think of your natural hair - but it is empowering once you realize you don't need to have perfect hair all of the time! It is good for your hair's health to let it rest sometimes, and along with your multivitamins, will help it stay healthy and prevent split ends. So, on your resting days, just rub a bit of gel in your hair and let it do what it wants!
