The most obvious explanation for why kids join baseball leagues is that they love the game. They are usually introduced to the sport by their parents, and they grow up watching games on television. They may get started really young in a T-Ball league, which helps introduce them to the fundamentals of the game. Naturally, the next step involves joining a minor league or little league team. However, there are many kids who play baseball for more important reasons; reasons that may end up shaping the rest of their lives.
For example, many kids play baseball in order to feel part of a team - basically to belong. These kids may not be accepted in school or other social settings, and a baseball team gives them a chance to interact with other kids who have the same goal in mind.
A lot of kids also have less than desirable home lives. Going to practice or playing the game allows them to focus on something more positive; if only for a few hours.
For these two reasons alone, it is important that you represent a positive role model to all of the kids on your team. You never know what these kids deal with away from the diamond, and that is why you must give your players a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence that they may not get elsewhere.
Lastly, kids play baseball to have fun and to win. Baseball is a great game, and there is no better feeling than winning for a young player. The key for you as coach is to balance a healthy desire to win with the teachings of good sportsmanship. This helps produce young men who not only excel in the game, but also in life.
Now that you have a better idea as to why kids play baseball, you should have a clearer understanding about your role as coach. In our next article, we'll take a look at why kids quit baseball and how a good coach can prevent it from happening.
