Become a Talent Director

Jim Posey
If you are seeking to become a talent director it does take some time. Talent directors rely on experience to be taken seriously. You have to show that you have been through all of the pitfalls, trial and error, and rookie mistakes and can hit the ground running when you are actually hired. The fact is that at some point almost everyone is going to fall into some pit falls while trying to become a talent director. You would hate for it to happen on your dime and so would your potential employer. Gaining experience is not as hard as it sounds. In fact, as soon as you get started you will probably find that it is a walk in the park.

The best way to start gaining experience is by becoming an intern at a talent industry. In order to intern you have to prove a couple of things to the talent agency you want to intern with. You have to show that you really, really want to be a talent director and that you are very good at operating with people. Most of a talent directors time is spent dealing with people. If you have any previous work experience that demonstrates this (such as being a sales rep or a waiter) you will have a far better time at becoming an intern at a talent agency.

Let's say that you don't want to work your way up from the bottom. Isn't there a way that you can skip all the leg work and ride the escalator to the top? Well there actually is!

Like in any industry experience is important however it does not necessarily have to be your own. What this means is that it is possible for you to find a mentor who has decades of experience has a talent director. This way you learn from some one who has already made the mistakes and crossed the bridges you want to. Finding a mentor is challenging but worth it because of the doors that it can open for.

There are many people who are eager to pass on what they have learned in all their years of talent directing. Finding someone who has the capacity to mentor you is not the problem, however, convincing him/her to mentor you is. Look for experienced professionals online and approach them honestly about your desire to be apart of their business.
