Get your GED if you did not graduate from high school. This isn't always a requirement, but it is preferred. If you did not graduate from high school, you will need to take your GED test from a local school system. This GED test is the high school graduation equivalence test.
Maintain a clean driving record. If you have been in several car accidents or have been issued several tickets you may not qualify to become a tow truck driver (especially if these tickets are drug or alcohol related) you may find it difficult to work for a tow truck business because they may not accept your application if you have a bad driving record (this becomes a liability for them and can cost them extra money in issuance).
Obtain a CDL (Commercial Driver's License). This will show you can drive a larger, commercial vehicle. To obtain this you will need to go through a drivers education course (you can sign up for these through your local DMV). Ounce you pass the class you will need to take the driving course. Pass the driving course and you will receive your CDL. To prepare for these CDL classes you can sign up for a CDL preparation class (which can also be signed up for at your local DMV). These CDL classes will cover all the information you will need to know when you go in for your actual CDL class and test. Because it is a prep class it will typically cost a fraction of what you will pay for the real classes and tests (generally less than a hundred dollars, no matter where in the country).
Return to the DMV and take the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations exam. This test will show you are up to speed on federal safety regulations.
Pass the sight and hearing tests administered by the DMV. Once you complete these tests you will be ready to become a tow truck driver. Find a company or business who is looking for a driver and apply for the position.
