Becoming a Chiropractor

Chiropractors manipulate the joints by hand without the use of drugs or surgery. Chiropractic is an alternative therapy based on the theory that misaligned joints, particularly those in the spine, can affect the nervous system. Back ache is the most common problem treated by chiropractors. However, chiropractors may also treat a patient in order to prevent potential problems from developing. Chiropractic practices started in 1895 in the US and it is an accepted profession in North America. There are several different methods and theories of chiropractic practice available. In some countries it is still an un-regulated profession.

The job:

A chiropractor will first interview a patient and take a complete medical history before conducting an examination. X-rays may also be taken and possibly urine and blood samples. Once the problem has been diagnosed, training takes place with the patient either setting up or lying on a treatment table. The spine is then gently manipulated and suggested to restore the bones and muscles to normal movement and relieve the symptoms. Chiropractors use their hands to locate the problem area and to perform the necessary adjustment or manipulation.

In addition to manipulation, other forms of treatment using light, water, massage, heat, or ultrasound may also be used. Advice may also be given on a diet, rest, and exercise to help overall well-being.

Treatments normally last between 15 and 20 minutes. A condition may be successfully treated in one session but a longer course may be advisable, depending on the symptoms presented.

Back ache is by far the most common problem treated by chiropractors. Other problems treated include neck and shoulder pain, headaches, sciatica, stomach problems, and conditions such as arthritis and rheumatism.

Although treatment is mainly concentrated on the spine, other joints-such as elbows, knees, and ankles-may also be treated, especially if they are affected by a sporting injury or accident. Many professionals and professional sports people consult chiropractors not only for help with injuries, but also for advice on how to maintain fitness.

Some chiropractors treat animals, although they may have professional qualifications with animals, such as veterinary science, before undertaking additional chiropractic training. Chiropractors worked in private practice, either alone or with other alternative medicine practitioners. In some countries, the profession is still unregulated, which means that it is considered a fringe profession. Chiropractors are expected to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Setting up a business from scratch can because costly, since equipment such as x-ray machines may need to be purchased. There is also the cost of finding suitable premises. Chiropractors will also need to cover themselves and their businesses with various types of insurance.

The work is very physical, involving a loss of standing. It also puts pressure on the hands, which are the most important tools used in diagnosis and treatment. A chiropractor also has to be a good listener.

Training involved:

Courses last between four and six years, depending on the country. Extra experience may be required after qualifying. Students based in a practice may receive additional training leading to further awards and membership of their professional organization.

Training always covers the theory and practice of chiropractic, including clinical, supervised sessions, as well as a wide range of medical subjects, such as anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, nutrition, and medical imaging.

Future prospects:

Chiropractic is a growing profession, which is working towards recognition and acceptance in many countries.

Interest in alternative medicine is increasing as well. There is growing interest in chiropractic from the medical profession, which sees the benefit in treating chronic problems, such as back ache, without the use of drugs.

Opportunities are there and will increase for those willing to become self employed. There may also be opportunities to travel and work in those countries where chiropractic is becoming popular, particularly in Europe and North America.
