Becoming an Election Worker in Kansas City

Lee Hansen
While awaiting my turn to vote in our recent mayoral and city council election, I picked up a brochure. It was entitled, How to Become an Election Worker.

Even though this information was written by the Kansas City Board of Election Commissioners, similarities are sure to exist from state to state.

Their mission on their website states, " The Kansas City Board of Election Commissioners is committed to maintaining current and accurate voter files, maximizing voter registration and voter turnout efforts, educating the voting public, providing the best possible services and conducting efficient, fair, honest and impartial elections at a minimum cost to the electorate".

The pamphlet was written in a combination of red and blue ink on a white background. How patriotic in theme.

In this tri-fold brochure, potential election workers are given general information about the process. This would include the following items:

▪ Qualifications

▪ Compensation

▪ Hours

▪ Election Judge Responsibilities

▪ Supervising Judge Responsibilities

▪ Training - which is mandatory

▪ Listed benefits of becoming an election worker

On the third panel is a form that you detach with pertinent personal information for contact purposes. This is mailed to the printed address.

On the back of the brochure are phone and fax numbers along with the address of the Kansas City Board of Election Commissioners.

One thing that caught my interest was information regarding fund-raising for a charitable event by working as an election worker. The idea is that you and/or your organization could give your earned funds towards a special project or cause. At the same time you will learn more about the political process in our country.

According to their brochure, "Election workers are the Gatekeepers of our democracy!"

If you are looking for something different and interesting to do, this might be an option worth considering. Check out your city's Board of Election Commissioners office where you live.
