As a nation that once produced products that now has turned more toward a service orientated society there are bound to be adjustments. Also at one time we were a nation of producers as many of our forefathers lived on farms. They maintained their life's with varying degrees of success but were much more self sustainable than today's average person. We have moved to the cities and now have became consumers that produce very little consumable products for ourselves or for society. Much of our food is imported from foreign countries.
We have created a lifestyle and culture that is totally dependent on oil and pretty much unsustainable. Sustainable growth should rely on renewable resources. It never made sense to me that you would create a society that revolved around a finite resource. While this address only one part of the issue and only raises more questions, It states the obvious and offers no solution.
Credit being another issue, even as a child I wondered how people could buy homes and really pay for them twice or more. How long could the price of a house keep going up and how many more can they build. Seemed to be the theme for the last 20 years. As most things have gone up in price continually for all my life and as wages in many cases have stayed the same. Just keeping up with living expenses we have seen the birth of the 2 income family and latch key kid. Where can the average person seek refuge from the economic pains of a nation. There just isn't one easy answer for every family or personal situation..
Sometimes even having millions of dollars of liquidity does not make you immune from any of it either. People with knowledge of self sustainability who are able to adapt to new situations are going to do well I believe. Those of us who can produce a consumable product and can adapt to a rapidly evolving world would seem to have a better chance. A better chance of prospering in the coming years. I believe that we have ignored the symptoms of our ailing society long enough.
Government intervention will only bring disaster as has been demonstrated in many governments past efforts. While claiming to have a nations best interest at hand most of the governing bodies act quite different.
Our salvation must come from ourselves and I believe it will come when we become more self sufficient ourselves. The life style that was built on the total dependence of fossil fuels is in need of some sort of modification. Mainly by each of us not by big brother.
