Becoming a Vegetarian

Deciding to become a vegetarian is a big step. For some, being vegetarian appeals to their morals. Many animal lovers it can be very difficult to eat animals, especially with new information being revealed as to how poorly animals are treated prior to slaughter. Sure, one person being a vegetarian will not make a difference, but who knows, if enough people stand up for what they believe in, these animals may not have to undergo such harsh treatment.

For others, a vegetarian life style is more about health benefits. Many studies have been published touting the many health benefits of eliminating meat from your diet. Being a vegetarian almost forces one to eat healthy. It means no more late night trips to McDonalds's for a late dinner or a quick stop at another drive through for a burger on the run. There are many health benefits to having a healthier, meat-free diet. When meat gets recalled or news breaks about another animal disease, vegetarians do not have to worry about what they have eaten.

There are different types of vegetarians out there. A true vegetarian does not eat any meat. Yes, this includes chicken and fish. If you decide to become a vegetarian you will be amazed at how many people will ask you, "Do you eat chicken?" or "Can you still eat fish?" If it used to walk, swim, hop, or fly, vegetarians don't eat it. A lacto-ovo vegetarian does not eat any meat, but does incorporate eggs and dairy products into their diet. For the more extreme vegetarians, becoming a vegan is the best option. Vegans do not consume anything that has to do with animals. This means no meat, eggs, dairy products, honey, gelatin, or anything else that has even the slightest bit of animal product. For many this also means an overhaul of their wardrobe.

Eating out as a vegetarian is not as difficult as you may think. Many restaurants are adding a few vegetarian options to their menus to accommodate the ever increased veggie lover population. You can easily ask for your favorite dish to be made without meat. At home, you can make many of your favorite foods without the meat. If it just isn't the same without the meat, try a meat alternative. Contrary to popular belief they taste pretty good, especially if they are mixed with other foods in a dish. A vegetarian chili with a meat alternative is a favorite! Definitely give it a try.

For all people it is important to eat enough fruits and vegetables. It is even more important for vegetarians. It is especially important to stock op on green vegetables. It is also recommended for vegetarians to take a good multi vitamin, but you should be careful. Be sure to select a vitamin for vegetarians. Many vitamins contain animal products that true vegetarians want to stay away from.

Protein and carbohydrates are also important things to look at. Meat is a good way to get protein, but so are nuts and beans. Do some research on your favorite foods and see which ones give you the most protein to replace the protein you would normally get from animals. It is easy for a vegetarian to load up on carbs. Be careful with this. That is a good way to gain weight. Be aware of what you eat to make sure that you aren't over indulging.

Adapting a vegetarian lifestyle is not that difficult. You may want to gradually make the change by slowly eliminating different meats from your diet. Once you become a vegetarian you should feel healthier and be glad that you made the change.
