Morrill Mansion
Set in the historic west end, Morrill Mansion is a bed and breakfast in an 18th century townhouse. The house is located in a quiet, residential area, although there are dozens of shops and restaurants within a five to ten minute walk down Congress Street. Each of the seven rooms is unique and features elegant décor. Two rooms, Back Cove and Burnham, have jetted spa tubs. The most spacious rooms are the Morrill Suite and Bramhall, and all guest rooms have free wireless Internet access and mini fridge. Deluxe continental breakfast is served each morning as is afternoon tea. Rates range from $89 to $239 as of 2010. Lower rates apply during winter, and you can always call to see if any unsold rooms are available for a last minute "Baked Bean Rate" within 24 hours of your arrival.

Inn at St. John
The oldest continually operating inn in Portland, the Inn at St. John is a larger bed and breakfast set in a Victorian home. The 39 guest rooms all have wireless Internet and cable TV. Rooms come in three types: luxury, traditional and value. The inn's value rooms offer some of the cheapest rates in the city. During winter, you can stay in a value room for $41 per night (2010 rate), and in the height of summer rates start at just $115. Value rooms are smaller, European-style rooms with shared bathrooms. Luxury rooms have jetted tubs and private bathrooms. The inn is about 2.5 miles from the Casco Bay Ferry and the Portland waterfront, and there aren't many attractions with a short walk. You can walk to the Old Port in about 25 minutes, but if it's winter or raining you'd be better off driving.
