Patricia Sicilia
If you're planning a trip to the Victorian paradise of Jim Thorpe in Northeastern Pennsylvania, consider staying at a Bed and Breakfast. They offer privacy and charming amenities, every establishment boasting an unique ambiance and history that provide for an out of the ordinary get-away. This sampler includes a Queen Anne Victorian manor, a parsonage, a townhouse, an historic mansion and a secluded wooded retreat on the edge of town.

DeFeo's Manor at Opera House Square: A gorgeous example of Queen Anne Victorian architecture built in 1880, DeFeo's Manor is directly across from the Mauch Chunk Opera House in the heart of Jim Thorpe's historical district. DeFeo's offers two rooms for adult getaways within walking distance of all museums, shopping and dining spots. The Suite has a sitting room in the grand tower with a view of Broadway and the mountains overlooking Jim Thorpe and queen size Victorian bed. The Blue Room has a Victorian cherrywood fireplace and king size bed. Both have cable TV/VCR, breakfast tables, private baths, as well as a refrigerator stocked with juice, water, jams, fruit and butters. A continental breakfast of freshly baked goods and fruit is served in your room, and hot and cold cereals, teas, coffee, hot chocolate and spiced cider or iced tea are stocked in the room. And oh, yes, the owner assures me that your belongings are well-guarded by their ghost cat, Larry. Visit their website here for rates and packages.

The Parsonage: Built in 1844, the Parsonage is the oldest unaltered structure in Jim Thorpe. Within walking distance to downtown, The Parsonage has four rooms, outside sitting areas, a shaded yard and screened gazebo in the garden. Enjoy complimentary soft drinks in the upstairs sitting room, and home made snacks are set are out in the dining room. The full breakfast includes baked goods fresh from the oven, a hot entrée, fresh fruit and juices. The Parsonage also offers AC, private baths, cable TV, hair dryers and guest refrigerator, coffee station and bike and ski storage. Visit their website here for photos and rates.

Rendon House: Rendon House is a brick Italianate Victorian town home in an area once called "Millionaires Row." Rendon House has three rooms with private baths, TV, air conditioning, and is within walking distance of museums, shopping and dining spots. Visit their website here for photos and reservations.

Harry Packer Mansion: Hovering over Jim Thorpe on Packer Hill, the Harry Packer Mansion's gothic façade was the model for Disney World's Haunted Mansion. Built in 1874 by railroad magnate and Lehigh University founder Asa Packer for his son Harry as a wedding present, the mansion is furnished with period antiques and boasts 15-foot ceilings and marble fireplaces. Guests can stay in the mansion or the adjoining Carriage House, both offering five rooms or suites. Along with Bed and Breakfast accommodations, the Mansion also holds Murder Mystery Weekends, Wine Tasting Weekends and special events. Amenities include private baths, ceiling fans, sitting areas and fireplaces, and a large outdoor deck porch. For rates, photos and details, visit the website here.

Home Hill Forge: Home Hill Forge is a secluded rustic mountain retreat on the edge of Jim Thorpe. The owners are not only travel writers, but glass artisans, running introductory and advanced stained glass lessons on site. The décor features the owners' stained glass collection, which includes 30 doors and windows, lofted ceilings, fireplaces and balconies. Their accommodations include a loft, a suite and a first floor court room. Room amenities differ, but all have kitchenettes, private baths, TV/VCR and climate control. I've never stayed in a B&B before. It's always been regular motels in the past.

Great reviews – now that my son is living out east I might have a chance to visit (or stay at) one of these places.

Wonderful profile of a historical building. I need to visit a good B&B for some quality R&R.

Delightful descriptions! An old college friend has an art gallery in Jim Thorpe, so now I have two reasons to visit this historic town.
