If you are planing a vacation with your family, a bed and breakfast can always be a nice alternative to a hotel. There are several things to consider when staying in a bed and breakfast with your family, such as what type of guests they allow, what kind of food is offered and how the hosts accept payment. If you find out all of a bed and breakfasts stipulations prior to arriving you won't have the surprise of spending the night elsewhere instead of the room(s) you reserved.

Most bed and breakfasts will lists on their website if they allow certain guests or not, but it's always a good idea to call and ask. If you are traveling with someone who has a hard time with stairs, make sure the bed and breakfast has rooms on the ground floor for you to rent, as most of them offer guest rooms on a second floor. If a bed and breakfast says they are kid friendly, sometimes they will only accept children over 12-years-old, so be sure to let them know your children's ages. Pets are becoming more and more accepted at bed and breakfasts, so if you have allergies or wish to bring a pet, it is good to always know the pet policy. Smoking and alcohol consumption are usually offered only outside, if at all, but if this concerns you, talk to the hosts about it.

One of the nicest things about a great bed and breakfast is a homemade breakfast in the morning. Ask what kind of breakfast to expect and if the ingredients are organic or not. If you have food allergies, it is important to notify the hosts and see what the policy is on preparing individual meals. Some hosts will prepare meals to order, which is one of the best features of modern day bed and breakfasts. If you wish to eat vegetarian, vegan or organic meals, be sure to find a bed and breakfast that accommodates your lifestyle.

Payment is usually not a consideration, if making a reservation online, although some times a bed and breakfast will not accept credit card once you arrive, although you made your deposit online via credit card. If you wish to use a credit card, be sure to pay for your whole reservation online, or take cash, just in case they aren't able to process your payment onsite. Remember that taxes and sometimes a surcharge are usually added to published nightly rates, so make sure you have a correct total prior to arrival.

Keep your family excited about visiting bed and breakfasts while you travel, by following these simple tips when you plan your trip. Consider family members, food and tastes as well as payment policies before you pay for your reservation or make a deposit and you will have less surprises when you arrive at your destination.
