Bedroom Decoration 101: How to Make the Best Out of Your Bedroom

Heide Lynne Canlas
Whether or not you prefer your bedroom cozy or stylish, elegant or minimal, you need to constantly remind yourself that your bedroom should be nothing less than the best for you. Here are some essential things to consider when decorating a bedroom:

The bed. By unspoken rule, the bed is typically positioned with its headboard propped on a wall. But if you happen to have a penchant for exclusivity and a larger room area, you can opt to arrange it otherwise. Bed coverings may range from practical blankets and bedspreads to elegant comforters, quilts and duvets. Choosing which bed coverings to use will naturally depend on weather and climate, personal comfort and preference, and of course, the budget. Just take extra consideration on skin allergies, and the proper care and laundering of the sheets. Pillow selection is another matter of individual preference. Primarily decide on a size and material to use, and be sure to look for a pillow that can endure daily ruffling and fluffing.

The windows. Privacy is as basic to bedrooms as toes on your feet. But unless you've decided to become a complete hermit and avoid any physical contact with the rest of the world, then windows in bedrooms are equally as basic as your privacy. The secret is in providing adequate privacy without sacrificing the well-desired effect. Window coverings (or curtains) are the principal remedy. There is a huge variety of selection of fabric, colors, lengths and designs to choose from, but be certain to pay attention to its effect on lighting, ventilation and the overall theme of the bedroom.

Colors. Colors significantly affect general mood as they are statements of our emotions and creativity. Add life to your room with sunlit shades of wall paint or do magic by experimenting with new themes. Your choices usually reflect your personality so choose not only what would make your room look good but also what would make you feel good. Try the inviting warm color scheme of red, yellow and orange for a cheery and intimate ambiance, the fresh cool colors of nature's blue and green for a calm and soothing effect, or the classic white that creates an illusion of space.

Lighting and Furnishings. Unlike other parts of the house, lighting a room needs only to create an atmosphere of peaceful relaxation. Besides the requisite overhead lighting, an addition of a single bedside lamp or desk light will do for other activities such as reading. Apply furniture in a bedroom to a minimum. Organize only enough furnishings to attend to your most basic bedroom activities.

Ultimately, do not to allow preference of style to deviate from original function, and vice versa. Remember to choose those which you will enjoy. After all, you spend a recommended minimum of eight hours of sleep daily, and since you have to do it, you might as well do it in style.
