Bedtime Tips for Children Who Wet the Bed

Mary Lamphere
Bedwetting is a common problem for young children who are newly potty trained and this sometimes carries into older childhood. It's a difficult time for both children and parents when a child consistently wets the bed and the worst part about the entire situation is the fact that bedwetting is uncontrollable! If your child is a bedwetter and has problems with wetting the bed there are some precautions that you can take at bedtime to help ease the bedwetting, reduce the likeliness of it occurring, and make for a happier time for both you and your child.

Bedtime Tips to Stop Bedwetting

Begin by cutting off drinks to your child at least 2 hours before bedtime. Children often wet the bed because they have had too much to drink close to bedtime. If you give them adequate time to have something to drink and to allow that to pass through the child so that they can use the bathroom before bed there will be less chance of the child wetting the bed at night.

Always, always make sure that you child goes to the bathroom right before bed! Not 20 minutes or 30 minutes before-right before! The closer to bedtime that you child can go to the bathroom, the longer your child can go through the night without having an accident.

Try to spend some quiet time with your child before bed every night to assure that he or she is very calm and relaxed when they fall asleep. Making sure that a child is relaxed when he falls asleep will help to promote a more restful sleep and with many children will help to reduce the chance of bedwetting. I've noticed with my children that if they are rushed to bed the chances of a bedtime accident are far more likely than if we calm down slowly and allow ample time before actually getting them to sleep.

Use a night training pant such as Goodnights or Underjams for children who wet the bed. This will help parents by making clean up in the morning a breeze and the child will feel more confident knowing that he or she doesn't have to worry about the bedwetting problem. The most important factor for parents of bedwetting kids to remember is that they have no control over the issue and they should never be blamed for the accidental bedwetting that occurs. It's actually a common problem for children and most will grow out of it with time. Apprehension will not help the situation!

Finally, create a bedtime routine and follow it every single night. Allow time for relaxation and make sure that no matter how the day went there is plenty of time to wind down and relax before bed. Do not discuss the bedwetting at bedtime because this may cause nervousness which may result in the child wetting the bed later on. Make sure that your child gets to endure the entire bedtime routine every single night. Whether you read a book and talk for a few minutes before bed, say prayers, whatever the routine is, it's important that it is followed every night. The consistency will help your child to relax more at bedtime and feel comfortable thus reducing the nervousness that can sometimes result in bedwetting.
