Bedwetting Solutions that Don't Work

Bedwetting is a difficult time for children and parents to deal with. What's worse is that there are so many different myths about bedwetting and how to stop it or why it happens. Many of these myths or solutions to the bedwetting that parents try in an attempt to get some relief from the wet sheets in the morning not only don't work but they also can make the problem worse!

Punishment for Wetting the Bed

Children who wet the bed are already feeling punished when they awake in the morning in sopping wet sheets! They don't need mom and dad coming in and blaming them for something that is completely uncontrollable on their part. Punishment, in my opinion as a mother who has dealt with bedwetting, is the worst thing that a parent can do to a child when it comes to wetting the bed-they can't control it!

You wouldn't punish your child for snoring at night would you? No! Because, he can't help that! Well, children who wet the bed have no control over this either. It's involuntary, just like snoring so there is no need for punishment in the morning.

Blaming the Child for Mental Issues Related to Bedwetting

Another common problem is that parents automatically take their children to a psychiatrist to determine the root of the cause of the bedwetting. Unfortunately, in most cases it is not a psychological or mental related issue so there is no reason for a psychiatrist to be involved. In fact, a psychiatrist will not be able to solve the problem because the problem is a simple fact of the child being developmentally too young still-that's it!

Blaming the child, claiming the child has a mental incapacity, or blaming the bedwetting on any other type of psychological issue will not solve the problem and could only escalate it into a mental factor! If your child is not concerned with the bedwetting, he is not showing any other signs of psychological stress, and there are no daily accidents then there is probably no need to take him or her to the psychiatrist.

Making the Child Stay Wet

Another solution to bedwetting that is commonly tried and will not work is making the child remain in the wet bed through the night. If your child wakes up in the middle of the night and alerts you that she has wet the bed-get up and change the bed! Do not make your child stay in a wet bed all night in an invalid attempt to make the child learn to stop wetting the bed! Bedwetting is not a matter of learning something and making them sleep in a wet bed will only make matters worse!
