Bedwetting Solutions: How to Keep Your Child Dry Through the Night

Mary Lamphere
There are many different bedwetting solutions that can be tried but this doesn't mean that they will all work. For some kids, it will take a combination of two or more bedwetting solutions to get them to actually stop wetting the bed. In addition to the many bedwetting solutions that are available, many children will simply outgrow the bedwetting during the trial and error phase of trying out the different bedwetting solutions. Ultimately, the goal is keeping your child dry throughout the night so that you can both have a good morning. Here are some solutions that worked with my children during the bedwetting phase.

Keeping Your Child Dry Through the Night Starts with Less Fluids

Have you ever left a cup of water at your child's bedside table for him to drink if he gets thirsty throughout the night? If you have, and your child is a bed wetter, then you have just spelled out disaster! It's a common mistake that many parents make, but all too often parents seem to set their children up for failure when it comes to bedwetting by giving them something to drink right before bedtime or during the night. With my children it worked best to limit fluid intake to less than a half cup within 2 hours of bedtime. Anything more was a recipe for disaster!

Staying Dry All Night with Diet Change

Soda? Bad term when it comes to children! My children are not allowed to drink soda or tea at all within the 5 hours preceding bedtime. This is because if they do, bedwetting is likely to occur. While most times my children will not be offered soda anyway, if we are out at a function or event of some sort and I know that bedtime is getting close I will offer the kiddos water rather than soda. Soda is a diuretic and it will promote bladder function making the child more likely to wet the bed.

Another Diet Change

Another way that I have helped my children to stop wetting the bed is by altering their afternoon and evening diet a bit. I give my kids high fiber meals at dinner time to reduce the likelihood of them having an accident at bedtime or any time throughout the night. Studies have shown that certain foods may increase the risk of your child wetting the bed so if you happen to have a bedwetting child, I suggest trying to determine if food plays a role in wet or dry nights. To do this, pay close attention to what you child is eating and keep a food diary as well as a bedwetting diary. Compare dates of dry nights and wet nights to determine if certain foods may have the bedwetting in common.

We Quit Talking About it Completely!

Another way that I was able to help my children all begin to stay dry throughout the night was to completely stop talking about the bedwetting all together. We didn't discuss it in the morning if there had been an accident, we didn't discuss it before bed, and we just went on about a normal routine even if there had been an accident. Keeping a clean pair of sheets close by, a mattress liner on the bed and some lysol we were able to quickly change the bed if there was a bedwetting accident and go on as usual like it never happened. I guess our daughter's felt more secure knowing that it wasn't an issue and somehow this helped!

Goodnights!

Finally, one of my children did end up wearing Goodnights for about 6 months until the bedwetting stopped. She felt more confident knowing that she could easily go into the bathroom (even in the middle of the night) and change real quick if she happened to wake up and realize that she had had an accident. There would be no mess in the bed and we just would leave extra Goodnights underpants in the bathroom under the cabinet so if she needed them they were there. This, along with allowing some extra time to grow out of the bedwetting phase proved successful for us!
