Bee Pollen as Medicine: The Facts

Over the past few years, modern medicine has witnessed a multitude of wondrous medical advances and modern technology. Nevertheless, the little honey bee still leaves us amazed at the amount of its sheer hard work and the diversity of products, which it is able to put out.

Honey bees are especially essential in nature, because they are a necessary ingredient in the pollination of many of the different plants that we see in nature today. If it were not for the honey bee, many plants such as cabbages, carrots, clover, cotton, onions, radishes, squash, almonds, apples, apricots, avocados, berries, cucumbers, pears, melons, alfalfa, asparagus and broccoli would not have a chance to reproduce.

In addition to this, the bees also produce another highly beneficial substance called beeswax as well as royal jelly. Bees are mainly responsible for producing four main products which have a lot of beneficial purposes. These are bee pollen, propolis, honey and royal jelly.

Bee pollen mainly consists of bee pollen grains, which are collected by the honeybees from a wide variety of plants. Bee pollen is major food source for the bees, and provides the main portion of their protein requirements.

The developing larvae in the bee hive use Royal jelly as primary source of food while they are in the developmental stage. The Nurse bees ingest the pollen and nectar, after which they secrete royal jelly from a special gland in their heads. This acts as a sort of honeybee milk, and the majority of the larvae in the comb are fed this type of royal jelly for three days.

After this period of time, only the queen larvae are continually fed royal jelly, and it is the rich diet of royal jelly, which is responsible for transforming the queen into a sexually mature powerhouse, with a life expectancy of 5 to 7 years. The queen will also have the ability to lay more than her weight in eggs daily.

Bee pollen has recently gained the notoriety of being a miracle food, because of its restorative and therapeutic properties, and can be obtained in a variety of forms from powder to capsules. Bee pollen is also rich in vitamins and minerals, which are essential for a healthy life.

Bee pollen also contains manganese, calcium, thiamin, zinc and vitamins K, A, B, E, C and D while adding essential proteins, amino acids, carotenoids and unsaturated fatty acids. Last but not least, bee pollen contains many essential oils.

Other benefits to be obtained from bee pollen are an improved mental clarity, a better sex life, lower stress, fewer allergies and an overall improved immune system. Bee pollen has a multitude of medicinal and healing properties and can be an added addition the other herbal supplements that you may already have in your medicine cabinet.
