Before you get started, you should check to be sure that you legally can have a hive or hives in your yard. In many cases, it is not illegal but there are restrictions that make it difficult. In this case, you may be able to find a farm nearby that you can use. Try to find out if there is a beekeeping association that you can join and that can give you information.
If it is possible to keep your bees right in your own yard, you should invest in a high fence. When the bees have to fly high to get over the fence, they are not as prone to interaction with other people. Your neighbors will also be calmer if they do not see your hives every time they walk by.
Bees need water and it is a good idea for you to provide some for them. It should be located some distance from the hive and is best if it has been left standing. If bees have water they like in their own yard, they are less likely to be looking for it in the yard of someone else.
You also need to make sure your bees have enough to eat. One way to do this is to make sure you do not take all the honey when you harvest. Bees that have plenty of honey to eat tend to be less aggressive so there are many reasons to keep them well fed.
There is a lot to learn about beekeeping, these are just a few things to keep in mind. Take the time to find out a lot more about your hobby before and while you get started. With the right steps, you will be enjoying your own honey before you know it.
One of the places online that I think has a great information and resources for beginners is Good Beekeeping. Make sure to check this site out and make use of the information they provide.
