Beemster is a company that makes a delicious orange colored Dutch cheese. They are renowned throughout Holland, and are even the supplier to the Royal Court of the Netherlands. Beemster cows graze in pastures that have a rare blue sea clay, which contain minerals that make the cow's milk sweeter and softer. This makes Beemster cheeses creamier and softer than most other Dutch cheeses.
How Does Beemster Taste?
I was able to try a variety of different Beemster cheeses and I loved them all. Beemster cheese has a great smooth, nutty taste. My favorite variety was the extra aged, which tasted a bit like a mixture of cheddar and parmesan cheeses. I know that sounds strange, but if you like them both, you will probably enjoy beemster cheese as well. The low fat version impressed me too, because it was very creamy and flavorful for a low fat cheese. All the varieties tasted great on their own, but were also easy to use in cooking. Beemster tastes great in a macaroni and cheese dish, along with cheddar and swiss cheese. But my favorite way to eat Beemster is with fruit and crackers as a light and tasty snack.
Buying Beemster
Beemster is available in many cheese shops and gourmet grocer. There are many different varieties of Beemster, including Regular Beemster, Beemster Lite, Beemster Minis, Beemster Goat Cheese, and flavored Beemster with mustard, garlic, nettles, or wasabi. Beemster prices will vary depending on where you buy it, but the cost is pretty reasonable for a gourmet cheese.
The Verdict on Beemster
If you like cheese, I definitely recommend trying Beemster cheese in any variety of your choosing. I especially recommend the extra aged variety, which is a great cheese for a sophisticated party. If you like cheese and you have not tried Beemster, you are definitely missing out.
