Halloween and the harvest can be a special time of year.
For children it is a cornucopia of black cats, candy and costumes. Trick or treat, it is all fun and games.
For adults, it's an official opening of The Holidays. It's also the time of year health insurance contracts are resigned by individuals and employers. Very tricky, it is no treat...and no wonder many people will stress out and crack up over the next 10 weeks.
I have found there is at least one way to relieve the tension of the times: drink some timely beers. Octoberfests are still around but may beyond their best flavor. Stouts and porters are arriving at taps everywhere as the weather grows colder as are barleywines. Other holiday seasonal beers are on their way.
One of today's brew trends - especially with stouts -- is barrel-aging. Brewers are accenting their beers with bourbon and other flavors by letting them sit and steep in wood barrels, leaching out some whiskeyed hints.
So, if your already-high health insurance premiums are going up another 20% this year, downing a local ale or lager might temporarily ease the pain.
