My best beginner trout fishing tip is to stay natural. I have caught more trout on natural bait than artificial lures by far. To be fair though, I have also done much more trout fishing on natural bait.
It just makes sense to me that a fish will go after something he eats every day, so I use live bait. Of course check the fishing regulations of the place where you are fishing at. And if you have had success with artificial bait for trout by all means leave a comment below. My favorite live bait for trout is crickets but worms can also be tasty to the fish as well.
The best way to find out what the trout are biting on is to ask the local bait store owner. They will know what the other fishermen are using for bait and will tell you. It is in their best interest for you to catch fish and visit their establishment again on future trout fishing trips.
Another beginner trout fishing tip is to be patient. When I first started fly fishing I moved too quickly. My dad would follow me up the creek and catch fish I had left behind without casting enough times.
I advise going upstream if you are wade fishing. Walking downstream stirs up sediment and alerts the fish that something big is coming down the creek towards them. If the rocks where you fish are like the ones year, you should wear felt bottom waders. The fasted way to a wet but is to wear regular waders on slick North Carolina creek rocks.
Trout like to ambush their food and will watch the current to find their food. If a bug falls into the water and goes down the creek the trout will be waiting. So I always try to fish a current and let the hook float naturally in the water. The trout will often be sitting in a calm spot so he does not have to fight the current but is close to chase after prey.
You don't have to be a superb fly fisherman to enjoy trout fishing. As a matter of fact you don't even have to use a fly fishing rod! I don't do much of the whipping about and putting the hook right on a dime. I an put it in the current to float where I want it to and that is enough for me.
