During the summer months the beach is a popular travel destination for many people throughout the United States. The combination of sun, sand, and water makes the perfect environment to have fun and relieve stress. When most people think of water sports they immediately think of surfing, body boarding, or even fishing. Rarely do people consider kite-surfing as a viable option for entertainment when on vacation. However, kite-surfing is a new sport that is increasingly gaining in popularity. Kite-surfing is not as hard as it looks and is extremely entertaining once you get the hang of it. Before you begin your kite-surfing adventure it is best to know your equipment, its uses, and its capabilities.

The first piece of required equipment for kite-surfing is of course the kite. It propels the user forward and is the only means of power besides the waves of course. Kite-surfing kites come in two types. These are manually inflated and self inflated. Most newcomers to the sport question why the kites have to be inflated in the first place. Kite-surfing kites are not the kites most people have flown, instead they are inflated either on the ground or in flight to increase their ability to float as well as make them easier to relaunch. For beginner's it is recommended to use a manually inflated kite-surfing kite instead of a self inflated kite-surfing kite. Self inflated kite-surfing kites tend to take on water when they crash into the ocean making them harder if not impossible to relaunch.

The next piece of equipment are the lines that connect the kite to the user. Here again there are two different types or setups. These are two-line kite-surfing kites and four-line kite-surfing kites. Two-line kite-surfing kites are much easier to use than four-line kite-surfing kites and should be used by beginners. However, four-line kite-surfing kites have a much longer range.

The next major piece of equipment for kite-surfing is the kite-surfing board. There are also two different type of boards, the directional board and the bidirectional board. As their names imply the bidirectional board has twin tips and is much easier to be turned around than the directional kite-surfing board would be. Most kite-surfing boards are bidirectional boards and beginners should use this board until they are more experienced.

The final important piece of kite-surfing equipment is the kite-surfing control bar. The control bar is connected to the lines from the kite and are what the kite-surfer holds on to. Also, many kites have a harness that connects to the kite-surfing control bar for added control and safety.

Use proper judgment when kite-surfing. Wearing a helmet is not a bad idea especially for beginner's
