Monopoly Here and Now - The New Monopoly

In Monopoly Here and Now the game play is still the same as the classic Monopoly game. You have to buy property in which you will eventually build houses and hotels. The game ends when one person has all the money and the other players are bankrupt.

The Monopoly for the new millennium however has changed a few details of the game. The pieces that you play with have changed and you can no longer be the thimble, boot, old, etc.

Monopoly Here and Now - What Has Changed

In the new Monopoly Here and Now the money has changed. Instead of each player starting out with $1,500 you will now begin the game with $2 Million. In the options menu, you get to change this up to $20 million. When you pass go you now get $2 million instead of the old $200 dollars in Monopoly Here and Now. Jail now costs $500,000 and not the $50 that was paid in the original Monopoly. You can no longer buy the trains, they have been replaced by major US airports.

Monopoly Here and Now - Game Tokens/Pieces

In the old games of Monopoly, tokens that you could play with were:

Flatiron, car, thimble, shoe, top hat, dog, wheelbarrow, horse and rider, battleship and the cannon.

These pieces have all been upgraded to new items in Monopoly Here and Now. Not only are the game pieces new but to the dismay of many classic Monopoly fans, the game pieces are now branded by many different Corporations.

Income Tax

In Monopoly Here and Now the income tax has been raised to $2 Million or you could still choose to pay the 10%. Generally, it is best to pay the $2 million and call it a day. If you choose to pay the 10%, you will almost always end up paying well above the $2 million because you are not just paying 10% on the available cash that you have. You are also paying 10% on mortgaged, un-mortgaged and the price of all buildings owned by you. Choose to pay the $2 million, even if you have to mortgage a property or two to make up the money.

To show you what I mean, two times I tried to pay 10% and I lost badly. The first time I had $4 million and after paying the 10% I ended up paying over $6 million. The second time I chose to pay the 10% I had $8 million and when I paid the percentage, I owed the bank over $1 million because I was charged over $9 million. The income tax percentage is tricky and you should only try to pay it early in the game when you do not have much money or properties.

  • All trains have been with major US airports.
  • Utilities are now internet service and cell phone service.
  • All money in the game is in the millions instead of hundreds.
The new Monopoly Here and Now is fun and updated but old fans of the classic hate this new game. They feel that Monopoly has sold out by allowing Corporations to get in on the game and game tokens.
