Beginners Guide to Second Life

Carrie Lowe
With the huge success that Second Life has commanded it is no doubt that you have considered logging in. More people use the site on a daily basis than was ever dreamed and it is the one place that people around the world can all come together, share music, clothing, buildings and friendship without worrying about language barriers as much as might otherwise occur. Getting started in Second Life is not something that is extremely easy to do, but with a few helpful suggestions, you can be up and running quickly.

Creating Your Account - In order to get started quickly you will need to visit the Second Life website. This takes only a few minutes and will allow you to sign up for your account. Choosing your avatar name is very important and you will not be able to change it later on so it is a very good idea to carefully consider what you want to choose before you finish signing up. This will allow you the opportunity to quickly and easy change the name if you decide before it is finalized.

Downloading the Player - You will need to ensure that your computer can actually run the software. While it would be nice if the program was a bit lighter, the sheer amount of information that is transferred from one computer to the next is quite large. Between graphics, sounds, animations and other data being shifted around you need to ensure that you have a computer worthy of the software before you really get started. Many computers will need to download a newer graphics driver as well in order to actually open the program and get started.

Logging In - Once you have downloaded the viewer, you will be able to actually login. This will require you to remember the exact avatar name, as well as password that you created during the sign up. Once you have logged in you are dropped immediately into the Orientation Island. This allows you to spend a bit of time learning the important details about getting started as a new Second Life user. It will help you with the details such as adding friends, moving around the areas that Second Life offers and even allow you to meet some new people.

Finding Friends - Remember, once you find someone that you enjoy hanging out and talking to you need to send them a friendship request. This will allow you to easily keep in contact with someone even if you are nowhere near them. Many people acquire friends quite quickly and this can be a great way to quickly learn the ropes since the friends that you make can be great sources of information while you are trying to learn everything.

Second Life can be a great place to explore and discover, but getting started can seem like a huge hassle. Spending just a few minutes reading over the website before you even get started is a great way to get going, and can allow you to quickly and easily ensure that you are moving in the right direction towards the success that you want to find in your new virtual life.
