Avatars are a big thing in Second Life. They are what represent you, so its important to make sure your avatar really shows who you are. Some people go around as animal people that are known as furries. Other people where something called a skin that puts fancy make up on your character. Sometimes skins have something called bits on them. Bits are sexual genitalia. You can do a search for these things, but it is often better to ask people who you see has a nice avatar or skin where they got theres. Most people are nice enough to act as guides to where to go.
Another important thing is how to get lindon, which is Second Life money. You can earn lindon by modeling, taking people's photos in a studio, building things such as avatars, dancing, or camping.
