Beginners Knit Bracelet Project

A Beginners Knit Bracelet Using a Garter Stitch

T. Bullock
I love this project! This is the first thing I ever knitted and I wore it to remind myself that I could actually knit something that I could wear.

This is an incredibly easy project for a beginning knitter and it's very educational and practical as well because you have to use several basic knitting techniques to complete it. It's a great way to practice your stitches without worrying about mistakes. If you mess up, it's easy to just start over and try again without wasting a lot of time or yarn. This is a small project that takes very little yarn. What makes this even more fun is that once you have it down, you can play around with different kinds of yarn. My pictures show the bracelets I made using both a bulky yarn and a worsted weight self-striping yarn. I found the self-striping bracelet to be fun because it looks like it took more work than it really did! If you know how to embroider you can have a little more fun by adding embellishments. This bracelet is customized to fit your own wrist, so as you knit periodically check the length by wrapping it around your wrist.

Remember that this pattern is not meant to teach you how to knit. It assumes that you already know the basics. I have links at the end of the article that can take you to amazing instructional videos that can teach you all you need to know for this project and more!

The skills needed for this project are: casting on, knitting a knit stitch, binding off, basic sewing (like sewing on a button) and weaving loose ends. Here's the pattern and the supplies you'll need:

Knit Bracelet (Garter Stitch)

1 skein of whatever yarn you like, preferably a worsted weight even though I also use bulky yarn
Size 8 (US) needles
A button
A tapestry needle

1. Cast on 4 stitches.

2. Knit back and forth until the bracelet is the right length for your wrist.

3. Bind off.

4. At this point you will have loose yarn on both ends of the bracelet. This is the yarn you'll use to attach the button and make a loop.

5. At one end of the bracelet, using your tapestry needle, make a loop to fasten over the button.

6. At the other end of the bracelet, use the yarn to sew the button on.

7. Weave in the ends.

That's it! Once you've mastered this bracelet, you can play with different yarns, colors, different buttons and if you like, you can learn to embroider so you can add some personal embellishments.

Note: for my bracelets, the purple bracelet was done with Charisma yarn by Loops & Threads Brand in color DK Purple. The striped bracelet was done using an acrylic self-striping yarn.

Thank you Lisa! I love being able to use all differnt kinds of yarn. And once you feel comfortable with the bracelet you can change it up even using different stitches like knitting a row and then purling a row etc. There are patterns out there for doing a cable bracelet too.
