Behind the Bell by Dustin Diamond: A Book Review

Greg Seltz
I would first and foremost mention that I refused to purchase this book, especially after reading associated reviews. However, considering how I was an avid fan of the television franchise, I was unfortunate enough to be provided the opportunity to borrow the book. I must admit that I read a mere quarter of the book, and proceeded to skipping uninteresting chapters, etc. Though the respective information does not contain spoilers, per say, please acknowledge that this is an opinionated article, and may prove controversial at best.

Saved by the Bell was a television sitcom that aired on NBC for roughly 5 years. Dustin Diamond, who portrayed Screech Powers, was apparently neglected by other cast members behind the scenes. Of course, his motive concerning the book was to dispose the immoral actions of fellow actors such as Zack Morris, played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar. However, it must be noted that Diamond has experienced an abundance of personal dramatics recently; for instance, the expose of his sex tapes. In fact, many celebrity news sites have reported the many financial burdens Diamond possesses. Whether the information interpreted in the book is actually factual or not, I must assume the primary motive to publish associated details are primarily monetarily based.

The latter details are according to the author: Mark-Paul Gosselaar utilized steroids, Mario Lopez was allegedly accused of rape, Elizabeth Berkely and Tiffani Thiessen were constantly "hooking up," Dennis Haskins was rude and inconsiderate.....illegal drugs were often abused, actors were favored by executives, and of course, Screech indulged in thousands of sexual activities. The less interesting details included Diamond visiting Disneyland and other incoherent events. My opinion on the matter is related to disgust, denial, unfaithful, money hungry, power driven, and ridiculous! Assuming that the aforementioned events are of any relevance, I highlight the alleged rape and possible steroid usage as the only real concern. And event that is debatable. Hell, I can not honestly propose that I am anymore angelic than these childhood stars. They were just simply more fortunate in acquiring fame than I was.

The claims included by Diamond are at most questionable. Of course, if rape was committed to a degree of any importance, would we not have heard about it; or wouldn't Mario Lopez had been disbanded from the set. To conclude, it has been years since I have tuned into re-runs. Obviously, Diamond is delivering such evidence now to simply pay his mortgage. His literary skills are at a freshmen level, and depictions are not quite clear and irrelevant. The book will at most further hurt his career and self image, and other cast members will proceed to whatever lifestyle they current fulfill. My question is, where is Lark Voorhies? My, I remember how beautiful she was. The book fails to paint a negative picture of her....

Dustin Diamond's new book is nothing but a huge sack of lies. Anyone who believed anything written in it (i.e. all major media outlets calling this book a 'shocking tell') is either totally stupid or didn't read it. Another good review can be found at http://theslaver.com/1407
