Behind the Mask

C. Love
Surrounded by many, seen by none
What I've seen & been exposed to cannot be undone
Excited, polite congratulatory exchanges
Unseen turmoil in ventricular chambers
Ripping, pulled in different directions
Shield of faux happiness providing protection
Crowded room, yet completely alone
Collaboration of voices though I go unheard
Asked how I'm doing, my reply is fine
Not as if they truly care what's going on inside
Smiling, nodding politely, holding back the tears
External composure veiling overwhelming fear
Emotional pain manifests in the physical
Mood shifts and changes unpredictable
With chaos and confusion churning inside
Don the mask of security & walk with head held high
