Behind the Smile

Vetta Bog
She feels so perfect, hardly believing she's real

A night of dreams come true

Everything has happened like the movies always claimed.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and for once she believes her own eyes.

Nothing can burst her bubble; the glare of a jealous eye energizes and she

Feels admirably strong, as though she owns the world.

Unstoppable, she faces the world head on, best face forward.

But at the end of the day the makeup comes off

She's left with the person she tries to hide. Love it or hate it she

Doesn't want to accept that the person staring back is herself.

She cries for what she isn't, laments for what she thinks she lacks

And days on end wonders why she isn't that person of the other night.

Behind the pearly white shine of her plastered on smile

She hides the fears and uncertainties that always find their way home;

Though few see through the strength of her mask

her heart lies tremulous and small, falsely adorning itself

with the red boldness of accumulated moments of victory.

What happened to her dreams, where did her charismatic hope drift?

A memory of the woman she was, a desire for the one she wants to be again

But do good things happen twice? A Déjà vu moment floods her mind;

Another day, another night, floating on a silver-lined cloud,

She was the woman of her dreams, the one she wishes she could be.

But another day, another time, silence. She is the just the woman behind the smile.
