As the political discussions and public demonstrations heated up prior to the Olympic Games in 2007, Jade ( then 7 years old) and I were packing for a trip of a lifetime.
Amid some protests about the unknown and a few " be safe but try and see the WALL and look-out for the Rabbits " comments we boarded the plane for a long flight out.
Beijing was buzzing and alive, heavy with both expectation and trepidation as to what the Games would deliver when we arrived.
The first thing that amazed us was the effieciency of checking in on arrival at the airport in Beijing. We had no problem following directions throughout the arrival terminal.
Due to restricted English, it is advisable to book into accommodation that has a pick-up service at the airport to take you directly to your accommodation, such as the Accor Group of Hotels. The same discounts for meals and great service applies in China.
The next thing.... strap yourself in for the ride of your life! The traffic is overwhelming! Making peak hour here in Australia seem ordinary.
Do not presume that pedestrian crossings are safe! Cars, bikes and bicycles have the right of way all the time! No point getting into an argument here! We were astounded at how many people can fit on a bike!
The best way to travel around is by taxi, very affordable, or organised tours - and bicycles for the very brave! Ask your hotel for a map and a business card that says :- Hello, can you please take me to...wherever. This way when you hail a taxi, all you have to do is show the card and they will get you there and back safely. Follow tourist attractions on the local map to get to know your whereabouts.
We also made sure that the hotels we stayed in had buffet meals, so that we could be adventures at times and also play it safe. The food experience was superb and we still talk about Peking Duck, pancakes, dumplings, baby Octopus, etc.. and of course rice!
There are many attractions in Beijing for the tourist - Tiamien Square ( now a happy place where children fly their kites ), the massive and very decorative Imperial Palace, University of Medicine, Silk Factory - very informative and great products, many amazing Temples and the very sacred Jade Buddha, the Jade Factory, Pandas at the Zoo, the Olympic Venues such as the Birds Nest (now filled with ice for skating ) and of course The Great Wall of China.
What an amazing building feat the Great Wall of China is! To actually experience this wonder - it is imperative to walk some of it! Be prepared for the "hole -in - the - ground" toilets as well!!
Beihai Park is another amazing destination. This encompasses beautiful gardens, huge lake and White Dagoba. There is incredible beauty and fascinating history to experience here. A small entrance fee is charged.
The exchange rate is still great, confirming this as a superb travel destination.
The history, culture, architecture and food is unique and a very rich and rewarding experience.
Of course, the Games were a success - as we now all know - and China's introduction to the rest of the world complete!
China is now a major business and tourist destination. Definately one that I would recommend.
Be aware that you will require a Visa to enter and allow the time to apply for this from the Chinese Embassy in your area here in Australia.
Happy and safe travels!
