Being a Better Parent: 6 Tips

Melina Ann Collison
Parents are the best thing a child can have. We teach love, understanding, caring, and how to be a successful adult which are things that would be hard learned otherwise. Let's tell our children how much we care for them by following these six simple tips.

Love

Show lots of love by hugging your children all the time even if they are infants. Applaud and congratulate accomplishments as your child gets older and starts walking or gets their first A in school. Loving them and praising them will help you build a stronger relationship while providing a since of self worth for your children.

Teach

Teach life lessons in everyday activities. If your child is not listening don't reprimand them for that but teach them the real lesson instead; always doing what you say because when you become an adult you have to do what people tell you and follow rules. A life lesson is held in all the little things we do for our children. Help your child dress themselves so they can become self sufficient. Talk to your children about sex, drugs, and peer pressure. Let your child make their own decisions.

Be a Good Example

Take notice of how you handle life's problems. If you are having a bad day make it into a learning experience for your child by showing them the proper and correct way to handle difficult things. Treat people with respect and love. This includes your family, friends, coworkers, and people you pass in the grocery store.

Discipline

Discipline your children with love. If you use the right kind of discipline then you are teaching kids limits and that actions have consequences. It is also important to reward the good behavior. Control your emotions and always expect them to do something you never imagined would happen. Try not to hit or yell at your children. They are little people so we need to treat them that way.

Time

Spend time with your kids and interact on their level. This is going to teach your child that they are important and special. Give up some activities that you might have otherwise done to make time for your kids. Children are only small once and the time you have together is valuable. Childhood is a once in a lifetime occasion and you can never do it over.

Communicate

Communicate with your children when they do things wrong and right. Compliment and encourage kids often starting at birth. Listen to what your child says. Doing these things will build trust and understanding in your relationship. Furthermore, this will help to teach your child that they need to listen to you when guidance is offered.
