Being Blind No More

The Bionic Eye Could Provide Visuals to the Blind

Imagine a world in which you were suddenly blind. Now imagine a world in which you were born blind and cannot even gripe over what you would miss. There are millions of people through the world who are either born blind or have become blind over the course of their lifetimes. It is unfair to take away the visual beauty of the world from these people. Hence why Doctor Mark Humayun has created the world's first bionic eye that could change the life of every blind person in the world.

Doctor Mark Humayun is a well respected professor at the Doheny Eye Institute in California. He has been working for years on creating a bionic eye that would allow people to see images just like a normal person does. His version of the bionic eye is actually a mechanical eye that has a built in video camera. This camera is perfectly set at the dimensions of something called the haricot bean grain.

Current test results have shown that the bionic eye has given blind patients the amazing ability to see the scientists conducting the tests. The images being processed are still a bit blurry and will need a lot of work before the eye actually becomes a regular implant into blind people. Humayun believes that he will be able to go into production with the bionic eye over the next three to five year period. Technology advancements could result in the eye going into production much sooner than anticipated as well.

A closer look at the bionic eye is quite amazing. The patient wears a special set of eyeglasses that is capable of capturing images. These images will then be converted into electric signals. Each one of these signals are then transmitted to the implant built into the electronic eye. This is all done by wireless technology by the way. The signal will then travel to the brain via electrodes, stimulating the brain and allowing it to process the image.

Humayun has created a invention that could change the lives of millions of people. Imagine a world in which someone would no long have to fear about being blind no more. This could be considered a technological achievement of amazing feats. Let us hope he continues to build on the technology and that it is released sooner rather than later.

This sounds amazing. I hope this device will continue to advance so that the images become clear and no one will have to suffer from being blind.
