Already in it- read here; not in, you might want to skip to the paragraph - not in? If you are already in the mix, let me ask you this, are you using all the social media available to you? Are you using not only Twitter, but Twitter on auto send? Are you using Facebook, but not putting Facebook on auto functions? See the difference? If you are using MySpace, are you doing any automated entries there? If you are using YouTube, do you have a way of getting some automatic responses to your site? Recently a friend was pointing out to me that there are ways to make your content go what is called "viral," which means, it actually moves itself, would knowing that be a help? We'd suggest two things, one is to subscribe to the available resources which we will list at the end of this article, and of course, the other is to enlist us as guides in the process, we're in the process of becoming, but we've been through the weird and we can save you a great deal of time and frustration. It's just a thought, we're listed with the other resources, and we'd love to help, but we also believe you should find the ones to guide you that you feel are both genuine and real- since you're already in it, let's use it better, and make sense?
Real and genuine are peopling terms, but in this social media, you don't usually get to meet and know them; this makes a huge difference in your ability to trust and understand what they person is about. Here are three tips which we've learned the hard way about this matter of trust:
First - do they respond to you? Not talking here about just a message back to you that they got your message, but do they honestly deal with you? This is hard because what many so called "Net Guru's" find out is, they can't handle the business they generate- the numbers are simply too large, and you will run into this also- which means, you have to have a system to help folks, that is personal. Does the person that you are dealing with have such a system? One person that I follow and like is Sean Donahoe- Sean gets back with you and it is personal. At least it has always been to us. But what about those who seem so genuine but don't get back with you? One way we found to deal with such folks is to look at what they offer, but don't get close to what they do?
Second on real and genuine- if the people you are dealing with don't support your work, meaning, they don't buy your product, or encourage your performance, say goodbye to them- at a distance; in other words, keep them in the loop as a touch base for your notes on new products and services, but again, don't devote time and trouble to them. They may be genuine, just not to you? Not everybody likes all products and services? Some are sales folks, some aren't, some are C.P.A.'s some aren't, some are service advisors, and some aren't? Fit in where you fit in, and instead of trying to make an Apple a Pear, go with the fact that an Apple is an Apple.
Third tip - don't let your heart guide your business decisions. This is hard because some people rub you the wrong way emotionally, you'd love to tell them off, you'd love to inform them that the world is a very big place, and they, may have an ego as large as that world, but that ego isn't going to do them any good beyond the world they believe they own! Whatever you'd like to say to them, don't- instead - understand, they are in business just as you are in business, and you cannot afford to make enemies in the social media. Think of it this way- in a regular community your reputation will form over a period of time and folks will know what you are like based on that. In the social media realm, you have thirty seconds- so as you can see, it's fast, it's powerful, and, when it is negative, it reaches destructive heights with a rapidity that is enhanced, because, people love, as the song says, "dirty laundry" don't get caught helping haters make a fortune off you. Instead use your wits to help them not get satisfaction out of you at your expense. Let that sink in because in social media, it's a hard lesson. Being nice when you don't feel like it is tough, but also, my sense is it is best to follow that through with some distance and light touches - just to make sure, as one marketer explained to me, "I actively search for whose talking about me online..." (See Chris Voss below).
Not in the social media mix yet? There is no better time to get in than now, when the entire scheme was new, there were lots of mistakes being made, fortunes being found, and directions being determined. But what seems more likely is that such is actually a process, and that, no matter where the business is development history wise, when you get in, there is every chance you will prosper. Think of it in terms of Microsoft software, it doesn't matter when you invested, except the cost of getting in ( a point to consider on social media); because whenever you do get in, you will find yourself prospering in that. The same analogy is true with your efforts to communicate, if you are just getting started in that, you will find it getting better and better. One source for such growth and knowledge is the outstanding scientist and communicator, Ray Kurzweil. Do yourself a favor and visit his blog, especially it's cool to follow his links.
However the term "not in" can also mean, on the outside, looking in, and when it comes to this phenomenon, social media, being outside, is a hard place to stand; the cold truth is that social media is warm. People are good, their basic intentions are good, the mass of humanity is filled with good people, and no, these aren't Rose colored glasses, of course there are people who aren't good, of course there are people who are mean, wicked, who aren't worth considering to follow- but, my sense of social media is that people are using it to raise the level of the bar. On intelligence, the social sphere is a help, on laughter, it abounds, on life, it transmits needs fast (consider "One" from U2 a site to help others); and yes there are parts of the web which not everybody can get into, but if you are not making use of this amazing source of growth- networking via social media like Twitter, FaceBook, MySpace, YouTube and others, then please consider starting, you will find friends you lost, colleagues you didn't know existed, and help for all sorts of things. It is the finest of the finest, let it be the finest of the finest for you.
