We live in a society were everything is about "me, me, ME!" We feel like if we don't do things for ourselves no one else will. We feel like we have to hold on to old shoes, clothes, magazines, books, and food because one day we may need them-when in all reality we can give these things away to someone who can actually use them. We forget that what we give away or put out into the universe comes back to us. It is a universal law and it is found in almost every religion, as well. In Christianity it is known as "reaping and sowing" and in eastern religions it's referred to as karma.
Let's look at Oprah as an example. We all know that she is worth millions. She is very popular and most people love her. Why? She is a giver. She has donated a large portion of her money and time to many people and causes. And what happens when she gives? She blesses others and in return she is blessed. Not just monetarily either. She receives joy, peace, and happiness. And no, I don't know Oprah personally. But anyone who looks at her would agree-it's written all over her face.
So how do we set this principle into action in our own lives?
First, become a giver without expecting anything in return. When I was younger my mom never allowed us to sell our old clothes or toys, we always donated them to someone. She said that since God blessed us with what we had, we should be a blessing to someone else.
Second, stop hoarding. Practice going through your belongings and giving away the things that you don't need. (Hint, if you haven't touched it in a year you don't need it). Stop holding on to things because you think you may need it again one day. Trust me, when you need it again it will come to you again. And if you give it to someone who can actually use it, won't that be better than it just sitting there waiting for you to use it.
Third, and most importantly, give with the right intention. Don't try to give and expect something in return-that only defeats the purpose. It has to come from the heart.
I challenge you for 30 days to try this and see if you don't notice a difference in your life. And remember that what you give away doesn't have to be big. Even a small thought, pray, or wish for someone else counts.
