Being Green in Your Accessories

One of the best ways you can show your green spirit is to update your accessories with eco-friendly trends. How can you do this? Check out the materials and learn to recognize which ones are plastic and vinyl and which ones are all natural and/or leather. Yes, leather is sustainable, though it may not be animal friendly.

Wallets and Purses. Purses are usually made out of a variety of materials, but it is important to recognize each part of the package. Fashion accessories should contain all-natural fibers, such as cotton, natural weaving, and anything that does not have polyester blends. You do not have to give up chic in order to be green. Jewelry and Hair accessories. These are a little harder to find in green circles, because many hair accessories come in variations of plastic. Jewelry is often wired on plastic or polyester wire or thread. Look for cloth and cotton-woven hair accessories and wooden sticks or clips which are not mass produced. Bamboo is especially resilient so anything made out of actual bamboo is sustainable.

Combs and Brushes. These are a bit more difficult, since they are mass produced in various forms of plastic. However, even in Wal-mart you can find wooden handled, natural boar bristle brushes for your hair. Be aware that the bristles are a lot softer than plastic, so they travel through your hair on a much more shallow scale. You'll have to brush a lot longer to get all the layers done. Combs can be found in nice, thick, longer lasting wood if nothing else, but combs are being replaced by natural brushes by the green crowd more and more these days.

Other accessories which you use will have to be considered. If you want to completely convert your line of accessories over to eco-friendly products, you will have to make many large changes. You shampoo, your laundry detergent, your furniture may all contain harmful chemicals which are hard to break down.
