So, you want to be a PR Specialist? Good public relations efforts often lead to the success of organizations. Public relations specialists are also called communications specialists and media specialists. They are often employed to write, research, prepare materials, maintain contacts, and respond to inquiries from the public. They often act as advocates for businesses, nonprofit associations, hospitals, universities, and other organizations. At many times they are the spokesperson for a corporation or individual. The goal for public relations experts is to create and maintain positive relationships with the public. Good public relations efforts often lead to the success of organizations. Public Relations specialist have a goal to understand the attitudes and concerns of community, consumer, employee, and public interest groups and establish and maintain consistent relationships with them and with representatives from print and broadcast journalism. An organization's reputation, profitability, and even its continued existence can depend on the degree to which its targeted "publics" support its goals and policies. They handle organizational functions such as media, community, consumer, industry, and governmental relations; political campaigns; interest-group representation; conflict mediation; and employee and investor relations. It's imperative that they enjoy writing and oral communication because Public relations specialists draft press releases and contact people in the media who might print or broadcast their information and material. The key to being a great Public Relations specialist is to enjoy working other people and writing. The working hours can range due to the client but for the most part on average PR professionals work a full 40 hour plus week and some weekends. They are often called to handle events out of town.
Public relations specialists basically pitch ideas, stories and events to the media with hopes the reports will become television special reports, newspaper stories, and magazine articles by creating more and positive publicity. Often the subject is a public issue, such as health, natural disaster or the environment, and what an organization does to improve or help that issue. Public relations specialists also conduct programs to maintain contact between organization representatives and the public. They set up speaking engagements, community events, fashion shows, fundraisers. They may even make media materials such as film, slide, or other visual presentations. Governmental public relations specialists are called press secretaries, information officers, public affairs specialists, or communication specialists. There are so many avenues a PR specialist can explore. For example, public affairs specialists in the U.S. Department of State keep the public updated on travel advisories and of U.S. stances and participation on foreign issues. As a press secretary for the member of Congress the PR specialist's aim is to keep the public aware of the representative's accomplishments. Many times PR specialist have BA is journalism, English, communications but you will also find PR specialist with a varied background. This is common in most professions. Just because one may have a BA in Biology doesn't ex them from working in the PR field. In this industry experience is also vital. College students should try and get internships at PR firms along with taking PR classes. Overall to be successful one has to be creative, self-motivated, and has the ability to communicate thoughts clearly and simply. Decision-making, problem-solving, and research skills also are imperative. People who choose public relations as a career need an outgoing personality, self-confidence, an understanding of human psychology, and an enthusiasm for motivating people. They should be competitive, yet team orientated and open to new fresh ideas.
