Spiritual Self
When I go to the calm place within me I know that all is well with the world and that I'm in control of how I react to things. I know that as long as I'm in touch with my spiritual self that I'm okay. It's when I loose touch with my spiritual self and just react to the circumstances around me that I get into trouble.
Alcohol
For example, I'm an alcoholic who cannot drink alcohol no matter what. When I drink alcohol, I do things that I normally wouldn't do because I've lost touch with my spiritual self. My sense of right and wrong goes out the window, as does my reasoning power and my decision-making ability.

Being spiritual without being religious is possible. You don't have to be a religious fanatic about God in order to be spiritual.
Higher Power
You can believe in your own higher power; call it God, Buddha, or whatever. The point is that you have a connection with a force of nature that is in everything that exists in our world.
Inner Voice
My own personal connection is, my own inner voice, or what I like to refer to as my intuition. Intuition is that small voice inside me that talks to me often and that I have conversations with in my head. This inner voice protects me from harm and can guide me through life if I listen to it.

18 Wheeler Truck
One time I was driving on the freeway and I was merging with one lane that was ending. An 18 wheeler truck was right beside me and would've run me off the road if I hadn't listened to my inner voice which told me to move in a split second decision that was literally life or death without head checking the other lane first.

Spiritual Without Being Religious
I know that I can be spiritual without being religious because I don't need someone outside myself telling me what to do. That's how cults get started by blindly following someone who claims to have almighty powers; just look at the Jim Jones case.
Better To Be Spiritual Than Religious
I think that it's much better to be spiritual than religious because you have respect for every living thing when you're spiritual and you don't have to deal with the fear factor that plays so much of a big role in religions.
Fear Factor
Religion has too much of the fear factor worked into it. The preachers tell the people that if they don't donate money to their church, that they will go to hell. They also tell people that by donating money to their church they get redemption and all is forgiven; when in actuality they don't really know because it's not up to them to decide who is forgiven and who's not.

Every Part Of Your Life
A lot of religions will tell you that if you don't go to church; that, that means that you aren't spiritual. This is a power play on the churches part. They want to be able to worm their way into every part of your life so that they can have complete control over you. How about I just be a good citizen, mind my own business, help out my fellow man or woman when I can, and live a happy free life? Can I do that? Do you have a problem with that?
It's All About The Money
A lot of religions do have a problem with that because the bottom line is that they want your money. When it comes down to it, it's all about the money. If they didn't have the money, they couldn't build their church. Without the money they couldn't have the big dynamic display and get people to blindly follow them.
Be A Part Of Something
Lots of people want to be a part of something that's greater than themselves and the churches play into this by providing some help and assistance for the community. This is a good thing; but by and large they still want your money so that they can go live in the lap of luxury while you struggle in the pit of despair.
