Over the years I have made some tips that I think I should pass on to others, because if it helped me, I know it might be able to do the same for you.
Tip # 1: Study. Yea, you always hear this, but it actually works! Find fun ways to study. I know you may think studying can never be fun, but you never know until you try. Maybe your favorite room in the house, or any calm, peaceful place will work. Personally, I fine that I work better when I'm listening to music. In addition, most people think studying the day before the test all night (aka "cramming") will help them remember everything because it will be "fresh" in their minds. Do you ever stop to think why they call it cramming? You are trying to CRAM too much things into your head the night before or the day of, and the information doesn't stay. This is a myth. Research has proven that we only retain 60% of what we read or hear, and we lose 30% within an hour, and we retain less that 10% of the information after a DAY. So what do you do? Repetition is the key. Instead of studying once for a long time, study in short time frames more often. Remember, practice makes perfect! With repetition, you are ten times more likely to retain the information.
Tip # 2: Don't get distracted. Yes I am referring to getting distracted in class or being "off task". But this also applies to outside of class. You have to make appropriate decisions. For example, what if you had to choose between going to that party tonight or studying for your biology test tomorrow, which would you choose? Even a no-brainer question like that is very difficult for some students. In addition, talking to that cute guy or girl in front of you won't help you learn the required material. That's why you have lunch, and before and after class to talk! So stay focused.
Tip # 3: Be inquisitive. Don't be afraid to ask a question in class or get help. Chances are, there are probably other kids in class who have the same questions. Also, in class, you should feel comfortable around your peers and your teacher. So just relax and learn.
Tip # 4: If you know what you're doing, don't be afraid to show it! Some kids are very smart, but just pretend to not understand because they don't want to feel superior to their peers; or have their peers feel inferior. You can have a big influence on others if you worry about yourself before pleasing others.
When all these tips are put to use, the effects can be great! Take the time to think about this information, and I hope you apply it to not just math class, but every chance you have.
