Being the Wife a Football Fanatic!

San Diego Chargers Fan

Maria Noel
I am the wife of a true football fanatic. Sure his loyalties are with the San Diego Chargers, but every football game apparently, in some way (no matter how small), does or could affect the outcome of the Chargers season. Being the wife of fanatic, I decided to try to like, if not love, his passionate pastime. I learned about the players on the Chargers and even came to care about them and their performance on the field. I was so sad when Drew Brees left that I wondered if I could ever feel the same about Phillip Rivers! (I now have a special affinity for Rivers too!) LaDainian Tomlinson became my favorite player as I saw how much he gave of himself on and off the field. I became a Chargers fan.

As a true Chargers fan, I root for them against all others and enjoy watching their games. I also like to hear the results of the other games, which involve teams in the Chargers division. Sundays are big football days! We go to church and then the football begins. I find myself anticipating the Charger games but find my interest wavering during the other games. I often will say to my husband, "Sorry babe, but I am footballed out." But again, as the wife of a football fanatic, I use this additional time to catch up on scrap booking or other hobbies that are outside of my husband's realm of interest.

Do I sound like I am complaining? If I do, I have not explained my feelings in the most accurate of ways. There are definitely times that I am not "ready for some football" but more times than not, I want to support my husband in his passionate hobby. Although not the case for all sports fans that are husbands and fathers, Chargers games are the only games he cannot miss. Thank goodness for tivo! As I sit here writing while the game is on in the background, I think of all of the times that my husband has encouraged me to take a bubble bath after a long and full day with the kids, or the times he has encouraged me to take that Target trip on my own because I have been with the kids all day. He thinks of my needs for breaks, can I do that for him?

When my husband and I first got married, he told me that he had previously thought that he would have to give up football for his wife. Just the thought of that made me sad. He puts up with my love of Lifetime movies and will even occasionally sit down to watch one. So, when I get my "footballed out" feeling, I just remember the things he does for me and it makes me want to happily hand him the remote. My contentious, loving, sacrificial, devoted husband and father to my children is a football fanatic, and that is all right with me!

So much that we read about these days is about how to make life better for ME, so it is very refreshing to read an article about sacrificing and making life better for someone else, especially a husband or wife. Thanks Maria Noel.
