Relationships need to be nurtured and couples need time together. When people work constantly they often neglect other areas of their lives. Workaholism can cause a person's health to decline. It can create an atmosphere of stress and tension. It puts a strain on marriages and intimate relationships.
Workaholics are people that become consumed by their work. They can be downright obsessive about work. Spouses and children may often feel neglected. When work comes before family the foundation of one's relationship may begin to crumble and the workaholic finds himself/herself on shaky ground. Workaholics often justify their obsessive work habits by claiming that all of those long hours spent at the office are all for their families. It is true that many people work very hard to provide properly for their families. Their intentions are good but they do not realize that time and attention are equally important.
Families need financial support but they also need emotional support as well. Spouses need time alone to talk and be intimate with one another. A relationship needs to be nurtured in order to grow. Workaholics will often steer every conversation back to their work. They find it hard to relax because they are never fully present in any environment other than the work environment. When one person in a relationship is consumed by work the relationship is bound to suffer. People need closeness both physically and emotionally.
The workaholic is often tired and irritable which makes it difficult to enjoy life in such a state of mind. Workaholics are so busy working that they forget how to enjoy life. So what do you do if your significant other is a workaholic? Tearing him/her away from work may seem like an insurmountable chore at times but even a diehard workaholic needs some fun and relaxation. Plan a day of fun or a romantic evening that he/she can't refuse. Throw away all of the rules except for one: No work and nothing work related.
Set aside one day a week for fun and play with absolutely no work. Even one hour a week can make a difference in weaning your workaholic spouse away from his job related obsession. It will help keep your relationship strong, fun and healthy. Your workaholic partner may actually start looking forward to time away from work. Think how surprised you'll be when he/she takes the day off to spend with you.
