Being a Working Mom

Linda D. Stanley
One of the most difficult things you may have to do when you have kids is go back to work. Working Moms tend to get a lot less credit than they deserve and it is very unfortunate. I personally have struggled with being a working Mom and now that my kids are 2.5 and 3.5, I have decided that the only way for me to balance my work and family is to go back to school.

American Dream

I guess what I want now is to live the American Dream. I want to be a working mom but I also want to raise my kid, which is my American Dream. The only way that I have found to be a successful working mom is to go back to school and get a degree that will allow me to write my own schedule. I am currently and LPN and am going to school for my RN. Once I get my RN, I will get my BSN and that will give me a ticket to be able to work at numerous places that have 9-5 hours which would put me in work while I am in school.

Don't Lose Site of What is Important

I guess the big thing for me is that sure I could be a working mom working three 12 hour shifts per week and be home with my kids the other four days. In reality I would have to miss out of dinners, homework, baths and bedtime those three days and that is something I am not willing to give up. Twelve hour shifts may sound like a good deal for the working mom because you get to be home 4 days a week instead of only two but I challenge you to think about it a little longer. Once our kids go to school, you do not see them during the day anyway so 8 hour shifts mean that you are at work while they are in school and you end up not missing dinner, homework, baths and bedtime.

Take Time Out for You

Whatever you end up doing, as a mom and especially a working Mom, you need to take time out for you. I take at least one hour per day and go to the gym to relax and have time to myself. We all love our children but we all need our time alone to reflect, refresh and just relax. Working moms are no exception!
