His Bella Roma, located on Martha Berry Highway, has been a staple of great Italian food in the Rome area for years, and many of his friends, also avid soccer fans, would frequently gather at his restaurant to watch European soccer games, Eddie always taking a few moments out of his schedule to join them while he performed his managerial duties at the restaurant. So naturally, when Eddie decided to open another location, this one in the prime spot in front of State Mutual Stadium- home of the Rome Braves, he wanted to keep that great atmosphere intact.
The result is the Bella Roma Grille. Straying from his Italian menu formula, the Grille offers typical American food and appetizers- hot wings, cheeseburgers, chicken plates- and a full bar. The food is great, the workers wonderful, but the best part- HDTV's line the wall. And if there's a big soccer game being televised, expect every one of those TV's to be tuned into them.
My first experience was on a Wednesday afternoon. I was invited by the Sports Information Director and assistant women's soccer coach of the college I work at, both avid soccer fans, me a casual (in honesty, I only got into when I started dating one of the women's soccer players). But here lies the true example of Bella Roma Grille's true soccer atmosphere- even me, just a casual who knows nothing of the sport, had the time of his life. The wings were delicious- easily some of the best in town- and the environment was exciting. It was a great game (I can't remember who played, and I'd never heard of them anyway), and even Eddie himself joined us at the bar to watch the game.
Another great thing- the beer was 2-for-1. I didn't drink any that day (I had to go back into work), but you can be assured that when the World Cup rolls around I'll be at Bella Roma Grille, eating wings and drinking from their full array of on-tap beers.
