Historic deliveries were made yesterday as a California woman gave birth to octuplets, the second time in United States history that such number of live births has happened. The first live-born octuplets were born in 1998 in Houston, to Nkem Chukwu and Iyke Louis Udobi. The world's first octuplets were born in 1967 in Mexico City, although all were reportedly dead within 14 hours.

The California woman, along with doctors and nurses, had been expecting seven, but was caught by surprise to deliver eight babies in five minutes.

Dr. Mandhir Gupta, a neonatologist at the Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Bellflower told Good Morning America that "the babies were born in stable condition."

The babies weighed in from 1 pound 8 ounces to 3 pounds 4 ounces. Initially, two were reportedly put in ventilators because they needed breathing assistance. Another received some oxygen treatment. Besides that, they are otherwise thriving.

It apparently is not uncommon to miss a baby in the belly, since the number of multiples made it hard to perform ultrasound to accurately detect the number of babies.

The anonymous mother checked into the hospital 23 weeks into her pregnancy, and delivered 7 weeks later. All in all, mother and babies are said to be doing well, although doctors are keeping eyes on them as the first couple of days are critical for mother and babies.

If she checked into the hospital 7 weeks prior to delivery, just who is paying the bills for her and who is taking care of her other six children. Also since she is not working just who is paying all hers and her childrens expenses?
