Bellows AFS is located on the windward side of Oahu and on the northern tip of Waimanalo Bay. This side of the Hawaiian island is a relaxed environment approximately 45 minutes from the busy city life of downtown Waikiki.
Staying at Bellows will save you money compared to what you would pay for a room in Waikiki. If you are wanting to camp on the beach it's only 7.00 a night. There are also fully furnished vacation cabins available. These run in the 100.00 range per night.
My family likes tent and/or cabin camping at Bellows AFS during the winter months. This has become our winter tradition during winter break while stationed here in Hawaii. At this time of year the temperature is cooler and more enjoyable for extended beach stay. The ocean water is still warm and inviting. The beach is generally less populated with visitors during these months.
Bellows Beach is great for all ages with the proper supervision. There are two Life Guard stations along this white sandy beach. The wave action is usually minimal, but active enough for boogie boarding. The Life Guards are great at keeping us informed on any possible dangers such as high wave action, box jelly fish or shark sightings. These dangers are a rare occurrence here, but should be respected when notified.
Other than enjoying the natural elements of the tropical beach atmosphere, there are plenty of other activities offered for entertainment:
-Miniature Golf
-Movie Night
-Lei Making Lessons
-Kayaking Lessons
-Surfing Lessons
-Snorkeling Tours
-History Tours
-Hike to Makapu'u Lighthouse
They rent an extensive amount of equipment for an affordable price. Further details can be found on their website.
Whether you are a military member living on Hawaii or considering a tropical beach vacation from abroad, consider taking advantage of what Bellows Air Force Station has to offer. I know that we plan on returning after our tour is complete here in Hawaii. Taking a Military Mac Flight and staying in a vacation cabin on a secluded beach is a great incentive for military lifestyles.
