Belly Dancing Lessons in Little Rock, Arkansas

Belly dancing is an art form that has enjoyed centuries of popularity. There are many different theories about the origins of belly dancing, but regardless of where and when the art form started, it has experienced a resurgence as a popular form of cardiovascular exercise that also improves strength and flexibility. Belly dancing lessons provide a great workout and increased self-esteem. Little Rock, Arkansas has several different options for people interested in exploring this ancient art.

The Traveling Hips Belly Dance Troupe, which is based in Little Rock, provides belly dance instruction in a variety of areas. One recent class session was offered at Take the Lead Dance Academy in Conway, just outside of Little Rock. Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced lessons are offered. Beginning classes start with the basic stance, secondary stance, basic arm movements and other body movements including camel and dolphin undulations, and hip circles, drops, tosses, figure eights and shimmies. Intermediate and advanced lessons build on the skills that are taught in the beginner's class. Intermediate and advanced skills include veil work, traveling moves and floor work. Veils and other dance wear and equipment are available for sale before all classes. Jeans are discouraged, but yoga pants, sweat pants or other loose fitting clothing is suggested. All belly dance classes are offered during weekday evenings and are $45 a month. Classes are also offered in North Little Rock and Little Rock on a rotating basis.

Just outside of the Little Rock area, in the town of Russelville, Belly Dancing lessons are offered at the Dance With Joy Studio. Classes emphasis fitness over form and every experience level is welcome. Belly dance classes are offered during the week on evenings and during the day on Saturdays. Lessons are $40 a month for a one hour class each week.

The YMCA also offers belly dancing classes for a nominal fee. Belly dance classes are available for all ages. There are three YMCA locations in the Little Rock area: 4701 Sam Peck Road, 1116 Daisy Bates Drive and JFK Blvd in North Little Rock. Classes are large and fill up quickly. There is usually a waiting list for the belly dance program, so advance planning is essential. No special equipment is required. No bare feet are allowed in the YMCA classes,so socks or other foot coverings are a must. Loose fitting clothing is recommended.

With more and more people looking for a fun and effective form of exercise, belly dancing classes in the Little Rock area fill up quickly. Gyms and other fitness centers may also offer beginning belly dance classes. Each class has its own requirements, equipment needs and age limits, so it is important to do you research.
