Ben Hogan Apex Edge Iron Review

Soft and Straight

Ben Hogan golf has been long known for its "players" clubs. The Apex blade has been around in one form or another for over 50 years, and while they have made game improvement and mid to high handicap player friendly irons in the past, most customers would shy away from them simply because if they bought a set of Hogan irons they wanted a forging. It was not until recently that Hogan Golf came out with a game improvement club that was also forged, and a lot of players flocked to it.

The Ben Hogan Apex Edge irons feature several game improvement designs for the mid to high handicap player. The head is a little longer from heel to toe and features a thick top line for added confidence at address. The cavity is cut out and weight is moved back behind the face and around the perimeter of the club to create a very forgiving high launching club head. Since the club head is designed to launch the ball a little higher, the engineers at Hogan were able to make each iron about 2 to 4 degrees stronger than standard irons. This gives the clubs a little more distance when struck, and due to the head design, the trajectory is not too low. The head, while larger and forgiving still keeps a nice clean look. The polished head really looks great when you hit the ball, and you really cant tell that its a game improvement iron you are hitting at address.

I hit a few of these irons over the Summer and was really impressed with the way they flew. They had a very consistent ball flight and were VERY forgiving on off center hits. Especially for a forged iron. The weighing/delofting combo worked out great as I got about a half a club extra with these irons without sacrificing my normal ball flight. They looked great when I put the club head behind the ball and were a lot of fun to hit. I was not able to work them too much, but they are designed to go high and straight and thats exactly what they did! I was only able to hit it low, with the a very slight draw, but I was not complaining!

I'd pick up a set if you are looking to go to a soft forging and at the same time do not want to give up distance and accuracy on off center hits!

Out of all these articles you have, which club would you recommend for beginners?
