Ben Hogan Apex Plus Iron Review

Clean, Classic, Forgiving

While I have done a review on the Ben Hogan Apex Blade. I thought it would only be fair to show the other options in the Hogan line. For those who have been around the game for a number of years like myself, I am just happy to see the Ben Hogan name still being used on golf equipment after Callaway Golf bought them out years ago. I am also happy to see that Callaway Golf has kept high standards for the Ben Hogan line and have not cheapened it in any way.

The Ben Hogan Apex Plus iron is the next in a great lineup of irons from Hogan. It is a cavity back forged iron with slight off set and a slight cavity for added forgiveness. While the standard Apex blade had little in forgiveness, the Apex Plus adds just enough to help the mid to low handicap player on miss hits, while keeping a very clean and classic look to the club. The designers kept it simple in crafting this club. They simply took some of the weight from the back of the club and moved it down towards the sole and perimeter of the iron. This is a very basic cavity back design as I said before, but if you are a better player looking for just a little forgiveness, then you do not want a large, bulky head to look at when you set the club down!

I was able to test a full set of the Ben Hogan Apex Plus irons over the Summer and was very impressed. The look just a little different than the Apex blade model. They have a little more offset and a slightly thicker top line, but other than that they looked as close to perfect as you can get! I was actually surprised that I was able to work the ball just as much with these irons as the blade model. They were just as soft and responsive, and at the same time forgiving when I would hit one out onto the toe or heel. I lost a little more distance on off center hits with this club than a more advanced cavity back iron, but these irons are designed for the better player. I see a lot of pros on the PGA Tour and Callaway Golf's Staff who use these in their 2 and 3 irons while going to the blade in the rest of their set.

This is a great club for the better player who needs just a little forgiveness from time to time. I'll review the Apex Edge iron next for those looking for the ultimate in feel and forgiveness!
